On the 17th of November 48 Chipping Campden sixth form students ventured to the NEC in Birmingham to take part in the annual Skills Show for students interested in career inspiration, apprenticeships and education options. “A real support amongst employees for apprenticeships,” was the response from the teacher who organised the students to attend the 2016 Skills Show event.

Mr James Slattery, teacher of Business and Econmoics, took charge of the trip and came away encouraged by the whole aspect of it: “It demonstrated that British entrepreneurship is still alive.” Talking to a few students they shared his enthusiasm and expressed that “it helped [us] look at careers that [we] hadn’t beforehand.” Looking around the dozens of stalls it isn’t surprising that last year it encountered numbers close to 80,000, making it the largest UK’s skills and careers event.
Some students were critical of the lack of options available in terms of job paths and explained “that it wasn’t for everyone”. Even Mr Slattery noticed that “there wasn’t enough to truly sell the value” and “it needed more individual choice.” On the whole he believed it was a success that ultimately helped the majority that took part in it. It even brought him “confidence into the long term future” since leaving the EU last June.
