On the 11th of February 2017 Year 8 students at Chipping Campden School enjoyed the experience known as ‘slam’ poetry day. The event was hosted by professional poet Giovanni Esposito (AKA Spoz) and his workshop allowed the 80 students to create their own poems while also creating a rap in the process. Different groups were set up and they started on their own creations based on the theme ‘Our Generation’. Yet out of 14 teams only 2 were chosen by a panel of teachers (acting as judges) to perform in order to represent the school at this year's Cheltenham Poetry Festival School Slam Final, the annual competition that gathers children from all different high schools around Gloucestershire to show who has the poetic X factor, which took place at Cheltenham Town Hall on Monday 28th April.
The Slam results came back revealing that Chipping Campden’s boys’ team were in 1st place while the girls followed behind by a hairs breadth in 2nd place! A lot of effort went into their performances, along with a lot of practicing, allowing them to show what Chipping Campden School is made of. When I interviewed the poetry champions both teams described the shock they felt when the judges made their choice, but they also felt like it had brought their friendship even closer with the work they have achieved.
These sort of events and workshops allow children to embrace their passion for creative writing while, in some cases, causing some to fall in love with the art. This school is lucky to be given such opportunities to help the students broaden their horizons and maybe even give them a few ideas on what they want in the future.
Who knows maybe some will follow in Spoz’s footsteps.
